Department Of Environmental Sciences GDC Sidhra Organized Awareness Lecture On “Climate Change Awareness And Concern” Under The Aegis Of G20

Climate change is the defining crisis of our time and displacement is one of its most devastating consequences. Under India’s G20 presidency climate change -related issues and finding probable solutions are at the heart of G20 meetings. Keeping this in view, Department of Environmental Sciences, GDC Sidhra organized an extension lecture on “Climate Change Awareness and Concern” under the aegis of G20, IQAC and the banner of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav. The Resource person for the lecture was Dr. Anshu Gupta. She discussed in depth about Climate change, its causes, consequences, and increasingly extreme weather events due to it. She told the students that climate change has caused a surge in natural disasters over the past 50 years, disproportionately impacting poorer countries. Hazards resulting from the increasing intensity and frequency of extreme weather events, such as abnormally heavy rainfall, prolonged droughts, desertification, environmental degradation, or sea-level rise and cyclones are already causing an average of more than 20 million people to leave their homes and move to other areas in their countries each year. Entire populations are already suffering the impacts of climate change, but vulnerable people living in some of the most fragile and conflict-affected countries are often disproportionately affected. Climate change affects people inside their own countries, and typically creates internal displacement before it reaches a level where it displaces people across borders. Several students from different semesters attended the lecture. The program was organised by Dr. Anshu Gupta, Head Department of Environmental Sciences, and convenor ECO-Club with the active support of Prof. Shonima Malhotra, Convenor G20 committee, under the able guidance of worthy principal of the college Dr. B B Anand.
