Gandhi Jayanti 2024
2024-10-02
To commemorate Gandhi Jayanti 2024, NSS Unit in collaboration with Department of Sociology under the aegis of IQAC, organized a thought-provoking symposium on the theme of ‘Truth and Non-Violence’ to explore the enduring relevance of these twin principles in today’s complex global landscape. The symposium addressed the profound impact of truth and non-violence, the philosophies of Mahatma Gandhi, a renowned historical figure who have championed these principles. The programme began with a welcome address by Prof. Shonima Malhotra. Proceeding further, she deliberated upon the crucial role and timeless significance of truth and non-violence in our lives. In her speech she emphasized how truth and non-violence are not only the cornerstones of personal integrity but also vital tools for cultivating a peaceful and just society. She highlighted that truth is not just about being honest with others, but also about being honest with ourselves. Speaking about the importance of living a life rooted in truth, she advised the students to stand by the truth even when it is challenging to do so. In her address she underscored that the concept of non violence transcends physical non-violence and extends to verbal, mental, emotional and environmental non violence and emphasized that non- violence should begin at home, in our interactions with others, and in our approach to resolving conflicts. Through personal anecdotes, philosophical reflections, and real-world applications, she shared how living truthfully and practicing non-violence can transform our relationships with family and friends, creating deeper bonds based on trust and understanding and a harmonious peaceful environment. Proceeding further students from different semesters took the stage to deliver inspiring speeches on the enduring relevance of Mahatma Gandhi's teachings. Their reflections highlighted how these principles can guide individuals in their personal, professional, and social lives. Students emphasized Gandhi's belief that truth is the ultimate guiding force in life. It is not just a virtue; it is a way of life. In a world filled with deception and confusion, truth brings clarity, trust, and peace. In their speeches, students also reflected upon the fact that Gandhi’s non-violence was not just about passive resistance, it was a force for active change. His legacy teaches us that we can fight for our rights without causing harm to others. They mentioned that non-violence goes beyond the absence of physical conflict and it is about how we treat others, how we approach problems, and how we act in moments of anger and frustration. The programme was organised by Prof. Shonima Malhotra, Head, Department of Sociology and member of NSS Unit with active support and coordination of Dr. Purvaiya Hans, NSS Coordinator and other members of NSS Unit under the able guidance of Dr. G.S. Rakwal, the worthy Principal of the College.
