  2024-01-25

Voting is a fundamental act of civic participation through which young people contribute to democracy. While it’s just one of many ways to engage in civic life, it is a powerful way for young people to make their voices heard and to have an impact on issues that affect them. With the aim of raising awareness among young minds regarding the importance of Voting, the Electoral Literacy Club of G.D.C Sidhra in collaboration with NSS organized a series of activities. The activities were part of the National Voter’s Day Celebration. This year marks the 14th edition of National Voters’ Day which was first celebrated on January 25, 2011, to encourage young voters to take part in the electoral process. Dedicated to the voters, NVD 2024 theme - ‘Nothing Like Voting, I Vote For sure’ is a continuation from last year's theme. The celebrations began with a Poster Making event in which students from different semesters of the college participated with great zeal and enthusiasm. Students displayed their artistic skills by creating thoughtful and colourful posters depicting the importance of Voting in a democratic country. Students who participated in poster-making included Neha Khokhar, Rekha Devi, Stanzin Thupstan, Ritika Sharma, Asrat Ahmed, Ruksar Ahmed, Abida Kouser, Pallavi Chib and Obaid Rafiq. This was followed by a pledge taking ceremony wherein students and staff of the college undertook the NVD pledge at 11 a.m, as directed by the Election Commission of India. The students and staff pledged to vote in every election without being influenced by considerations of race, religion, caste, community, language or any inducement. The pledge taking ceremony was further followed by a Symposium where students from sixth semester of the college- Tushar, Rahul Singh, Anshuman Verma and Rashid Hussain made brief presentations foregrounding the myriad aspects of Voting – it’s meaning, eligibility, significance and contemporary relevance. The event was successfully organized by members of Electoral Literacy Club - Dr. Harpreet Kour & Dr. Rudrika Khajuria and NSS Unit – Dr. Mehmood Ahmed & Prof. Deepa Kak. The event was organized under the guidance of the Principal of the College, Dr. B. B. Anand.
