Women Development Cell and IQAC, GDC Sidhra organised a one-day workshop on Three new criminal Laws and Protection of Rights of Children against Production, Distribution and Consumption of Child sexual abuse Material (CSAM). The resource person for the event was Advocate Kiran Thakur, a renowned legal expert, who runs an initiative known as DHIRA: The Undistracted Mind,” a legal awareness program designed to educate public about their legal rights and responsibilities. Dr. Anu Sharma, Convenor, Women Development Cell formally welcomed the resource person and introduced her to the students and faculty members. In the beginning of the presentation, the resource person told the students about three new criminal laws that have been introduced recently. Then she introduced to the audience Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita which is the official criminal code in India. It came into effect on 1 July, 2024 after being passed by the parliament in December 2023 to replace the Indian Penal Code (IPC), which dated back to the period of British India. She discussed various changes in the BNS, 20 new offences have been added and 19 provisions in the repealed IPC have been dropped. She elaborated on how the Nyaya Sanhita will impact the handling of child abuse cases. She discussed various legal provisions and protections available to victims, offering practical guidance on how to seek help and legal recourse. She discussed various sections of BNS like Section 69, 95, 63, 64 and many more sections. She also made the audience aware about Zero FIR, Electronic FIR and the Emergency number 112 for help in any kind of emergency situation. It was followed by an interactive session with the students where the students asked various questions and discussed their queries with the resource person of the workshop. Principal of the college Dr. G S Rakwal stressed on the importance of organising such events and also the role that such awareness programs can play in safeguarding the rights and well being of the citizens. He also congratulated the organisers for the success of the event. The whole event was organized by Dr Anu Sharma, Convenor Women Development Cell (WDC) and Dr. Anshu Gupta, convenor, IQAC with the active support of Dr. Harpreet Kour, HoD Political Science and Dr. Mussarat Chowdhary, HoD Economics along with other members of WDC. The event was attended by 50 students and faculty members of the college. The program ended with a formal vote of thanks by Dr. Anu Sharma.
