World Environment Day 2023 under Mission LIFE

Department of Environmental Sciences GDC Sidhra commemorates World Environment Day 2023 under Mission LIFE Overuse of plastic coupled with our incessant love for disposable culture, are the major human activities that are literally suffocating the planet. Plastic production has increased exponentially over recent decades and today the world is generating 400 million tonnes of plastic waste yearly. Therefore, the theme for World Environment Day on 5 June 2023 focuses on solutions to plastic pollution under the campaign #BeatPlasticPollution emphasizing that Plastic pollution is preventable and taking action across all sectors of society can halt and reverse it. Department of Environmental Sciences, ECO-Club “Srishti” with the support of NSS Unit of GDC Sidhra under Mission LiFE organised series of activities to commemorate World Environment Day. This year, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India envisages to celebrate the World Environment Day 2023 with a thrust on the Mission LiFE. The activity organised was “Awareness Campaign” on the theme #BeatPlasticPollution in which students from different semesters of the college generated awareness on Plastic Pollution. The students clicked their pictures with different thematic captions related to Solutions to Plastic Pollution, impacts of Plastic Pollution and ways to tackle Plastic Pollution etc. As a step further, the students also kept the pictures as their social media (Whatsapp, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter etc) profile pictures and statuses with an intention of reaching out and conveying the same to maximum people possible. An essay writing competition was also organised on the theme “Beat Plastic Pollution” in which several students of different semesters participated in the essay writing. The participation was judged by Prof. Meesha Bhagat, Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science and Prof. Rudrika Khajuria, Assistant Professor in the Department of English of the college. Palvi Devi of B.A Sem VI was adjudged first whereas Tofeeq Umer of B.A Sem VI secured second position and the third position was bagged by Manharan Singh of BA Sem II of the college. Speaking on the occasion Worthy Principal of the college, Dr. B B Anand said that World Environment Day (June 5) is an occasion which brings together millions of people across the world for awareness and action for the environment and he motivated the students to do their bit for the conservation of environment. He further motivated the students that maintaining the campus “Green” and contributing to carbon neutrality is a natural interest and a social responsibility. Dr. Anshu Gupta interacted with the students and told them that we are in the middle of an overwhelming toxic tidal wave as plastic pollutes our environment and negatively impacts human in a myriad of ways over its life cycle. She emphasized that Plastic pollution is preventable and taking action across all sectors of society can halt and reverse it. The programme was organised by Dr. Anshu Gupta, Head Department of Environmental Sciences and Convener ECO-Club “Srishti”; Prof. Deepa Kak co-convenor ECO-club with active support and co-ordination of Dr. Mehmood Ahmed, NSS PO and Dr. Anu Sharma, member ECO-Club of the college under the patronship of worthy principal of the college, Dr. B B Anand. The event was organised under the aegis of IQAC, Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav.
