  2023-02-02

Department of Environmental Sciences and ECO-CLUB “SRISHTI” of Government Degree College Sidhra under the patronage of worthy Principal, Dr. B. B. Anand organised Awareness lecture and Documentary Screening to celebrate “World Wetlands Day 2023” on 2nd of February 2023, under the aegis of IQAC and the banner of ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’. World Wetlands Day, celebrated annually on 2 February, aims to raise global awareness about the vital role of wetlands for people and planet in maintaining biodiversity and supporting human well-being. This day also marks the date of the adoption of the Convention on Wetlands on 2 February 1971, in the Iranian city of Ramsar. Dr. Anshu Gupta sensitized the students about the theme of this year’s World Wetlands Day “Its time for Wetlands Restoration”. She discussed about the importance of wetlands that are critically important ecosystems and contribute to biodiversity, climate mitigation and adaptation, freshwater availability, world economies, and more. Students were made aware about the wetlands in J&K also. She stressed upon the fact that wetlands are among the ecosystems with the highest rates of decline. It is urgent that we raise national and global awareness about wetlands in order to reverse their rapid loss and encourage actions to conserve and restore them. The event was organized by Dr. Anshu Gupta, Convener, ECO Club and Head, Department of Environmental Sciences of the college and coordinated by Prof. Deepa Kak and Dr. Tania Baloria under the able guidance of worthy Principal of the college, Dr. B.
